Pathways to Decarbonization: What can regulators learn from current available studies?

Wednesday, May 19, 2021 (2pm - 3:30pm US/Eastern)

A forthcoming report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine assesses the technological, policy, and social dimensions of accelerating the deep decarbonization of the U.S. economy. The study finds that pathways to zero emissions share core features, including decarbonizing electricity, increasing energy efficiency, and increasing carbon sequestration efforts. The role of natural gas in these pathways is primarily limited to electricity generation with carbon capture and uses where the available substitutes are imperfect or impractical (e.g., high-temperature industrial applications). Other analysts believe that natural gas and its associated infrastructure will be an indispensable part of a low-carbon future.
This webinar will address the following questions:
• What are the likely time horizons for cost recovery for both new and existing gas infrastructure and gas-fired electric generation, given the different views of the future of natural gas?
• What are the "no-regrets" strategies with respect to gas systems that utility commissions can implement now to maintain flexibility in meeting decarbonization targets?
• What are some of the challenges regulators face right now in working towards their states’ climate and renewable energy goals, and what solutions are they implementing in response?
