- Rate School Accounting Basics: September 27 (3:00 - 4:00 EST)
The Rate School Accounting Basics class is for students with little or no accounting background or those who would like a refresher. This class is designed to give students a basic understanding of the terminology to be used during the live Rate School in Coronado. Specifically, the following terms will be reviewed.- Financial Statements (Income Statement/Balance Sheet)
- Expenses v. Capital Costs
- Deferred Costs / Regulatory Assets
- Depreciation Expense (Example)
- Rate Base
- Revenue Requirement
- The Test Year​
- Why We are Here & Why It Matters: October 4 (3:00 - 4:00 EST)
Why We Are Here and Why It Matters is an introductory class for new Rate School student exploring the need for regulation and the importance of balancing the needs of customers and utilities. This class is designed to give a high-level overview of the nature of regulation and put into perspective some of the accounting topics covered in the Accounting Basics course. After this class, students should be able to answer what makes regulation important in our industry and how we use those concepts to set fair revenue requirements and rates.
